On a rainy Saturday morning we were looking for a place fairly close to home that we hadn't yet explored in the outdoors. Surprisingly, we had never stopped by the Oxon Hill Farm area and upon arrival we couldn't believe it was so close to National Harbor and the Casino, yet felt like a world away with all of the vast land conserved right on the waterfront of the Potomac River across from downtown Alexandria. We started in the farm area exploring the barn and other historic areas, as well as talking to the cows, pigs, horses and chickens. Without realizing, we started walking down the path to the river and it was well worth the beautiful stroll through the big green field of flowers. There are a couple of picnic tables on the river in case you ever want to bring a lunch and enjoy this space or throw a line in to fish for something in that cove. The only challenge was walking back up the hill as its a little steep (especially with a stroller) and works the muscles! You can choose to go back the same rocky path or take the road that is much easier to walk with kids. Website: https://www.nps.gov/oxhi/index.htm
