My niece Rose and I had a fun visit to the Planet Word Museum this summer while she was visiting us in Washington DC.  The museum is so close to my office so it was a nice discovery to see all of the exhibits and the content is so interactive!  It's definitely worth a visit!  https://planetwordmuseum.org/franklin-school/

Scottish Rite House of The Temple

On my bucket list in DC was visiting the Scottish Rite House of the Temple located at 1733 16th St NW. There are tours almost every day of the week open to the public and is free.  I was very impressed with the tour, the knowledge of the tour guide and how much history is in this building. I also learned that it was the first public library opened in DC. Take time to go see this beautiful building! https://scottishrite.org/our-museum/planning-your-visit/tours/

River mountain glamping getaway

Our family very much enjoyed our weekend trip up to River Mountain Resort near Everett, Pennsylvania. Upon arrival we received a very warm welcome and one of the employees immediately loaned us his tackle box to go fishing since we had accidentally left ours at home. We went there with some friends for two nights, so they booked a Yurt and we booked a room at the Main Lodge area. These are two very different experiences and both worth trying, depending on your group size and interest in which location you want to be at around the property. The weekend consisted of grilling out, cooking s'mores by the campfire, lots of fishing at their pond (and many bites from the bluegills and bass if you use live bait) and even a snake story, hikes around the extensive property, night soaks in their cozy wooden hot tubs under a starry filled night sky, meals and happy hour drinks in the dining lodge with other glampers on site for the weekend, and a break out trip up to the town of Everett for lunch at the AMAZINGLY YUMMY restaurant Black Valley Provender - www.blackvalleyprovender.com/

Masonic Temple of Alexandria

Even though we have lived for years within a couple of miles of the famous Masonic Temple of Alexandria we have never done a tour until recently. February also happens to be the month that the Masons are celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the dedication of the memorial so a special time to visit! The tower is fashioned after the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt. The 333-foot (101 m) tall memorial sits atop Shooter's Hill and is the tallest building in the city so it provides quite a view of Alexandria and the surrounding areas on the Potomac River.  I took along my 6 year old son and he really enjoyed it!  If you live in the area or are just visiting, it's worth scheduling a tour on their website. https://gwmemorial.org/pages/tours

Visiting the one of the newest and most amazing museums in the DC area - the National Museum of the US Army. Well worth a visit if you live in the area or are passing through. The kids activities were also really well done and very interactive!

Oxon cove park & Oxon hill farm

On a rainy Saturday morning we were looking for a place fairly close to home that we hadn't yet explored in the outdoors. Surprisingly, we had never stopped by the Oxon Hill Farm area and upon arrival we couldn't believe it was so close to National Harbor and the Casino, yet felt like a world away with all of the vast land conserved right on the waterfront of the Potomac River across from downtown Alexandria. We started in the farm area exploring the barn and other historic areas, as well as talking to the cows, pigs, horses and chickens. Without realizing, we started walking down the path to the river and it was well worth the beautiful stroll through the big green field of flowers. There are a couple of picnic tables on the river in case you ever want to bring a lunch and enjoy this space or throw a line in to fish for something in that cove. The only challenge was walking back up the hill as its a little steep (especially with a stroller) and works the muscles!  You can choose to go back the same rocky path or take the road that is much easier to walk with kids.  Website: https://www.nps.gov/oxhi/index.htm
